Check emissions light (which code reader too?)

My CEL came on yesterday, do they go off on their own or will I need a reader? Also anyone got any recommendations for what reader to buy?

I've got a 200cpsi sports cat so wasn't expecting it to come on, but then equally given how **** my car runs and the fact the engine is on it's dying last legs it's probably no surprise either!
