Can't get my wheels off!

I'm stressed out!...wheel nuts are stuck solid (including the security nut)....bought a four way wheel wrench to see if I can get better leaverage and have put some WD40 in the studs...just wont budge....affecting both front wheels! I'm nervous that I will mash the security nut or sheer one of the bolts! Any ideas how to shift the nuts?

Cheers

Im guessing some retard garage in the past has over tightened them with an airgun. Id get yourself down to a local QuickFit and slip them a £10 to undo them for you to prevent you damaging them.

I had to pay my local garage £20 to get the airgun on the locking wheel nuts as they were buggered. I've put the normal nuts back on now and done them up human-being tight as opposed to superman locktight.

The locking wheelnuts I had were terrible..

Mine were the same
Bought a Drapper torque wrench to get mine of for the leverage

Mine were stuck on as well, I just jumped on the wrench a few times and it came free.

Don't think that's the best way lol but it worked, but what you need is a long handled wrench / breaker bar not a 4 way.

you need a proper wheel nut cracking bar.....at least 2ft long

a little tip for the locking nut - use two hands one to hold the socket/adapter on the locking nut - the other to move the bar - and undue the lock nut first

if you use a bar you can "feel" it better than just using a power gun

Would have thought you're more likely to sheer a bolt with gun tbh, you need to apply force in a smooth motion and with a constant force.

Airguns just wham the nuts on and off....

spot on foxspeed, common mistake is to undo all the nuts and leave the locking one till last. leaving all the presure on the locking nut.

...you can always rely on foxspeed to have the answers.....will a torque wrench be good to act like a wheel nut cracking bar? Anyone know what the torque settings are so I can get them correct when the wheels go back on?

Get a torque wrench, should be able to get a basic one from machine mart for ~£30. I always use this when taking wheels on and off. I think the bolts need to be at about 130Nm

some torque wrenches are not made to be used like that...screws up the calibration

should always use a proper wheel bar

wheel nuts are -

130nm or 140 nm depending on what manual you look in

i torque the standard bolts to 140nm and the locking nut to 100nm

I put a bit of copper slip on them too, stops them being hard to get off the next time.

...finally got around to buying a breaking bar and got the nuts loose....apart from the security nuts on the front wheels! Can't seem to keep enough pressure on the nut and the key just slips out of the nut....bit worried that I've damaged my nuts (oooh matron). The key works on the rears fine so I think that is ok....tried putting WD40 around the nut but still no joy.....any ideas? or is it a case of taking it to a local garage to see if they can help....? Just scared the wheels are gonna get damaged!

if you have run out of what you know what to do then yes take it somewhere but ask them first - most reputable places have the correct tools/sockets to remove locking bolts

My wheel was actually stuck to the disc a few months ago! I had to use a rubber mallet to hit it off

I had the same problem. All 5 bolts off and it would not budge.

Car was only 8 months old and had to resort to a plack of wood and a lump hammer.

...so I went to a couple of tyre places and they both tried putting the key on the nuts with a long breaker bar....no success....one guy told me he could get a hammer and chessel to the locking nuts but I should face up to the fact that there would be wheel damage however I tried to do it!! So I went away and checked ebay for a suitable tool......found a clever tool that you hammer a soft metal bit into the security nut pattern and it fits in snug....then it uses a impact tool to shift the nut.....advert said 'as used by RAC etc'....so that got me thinking and I called the RAC on the off chance, who very suprisingly agreed to come out on the basis that I needed the wheel changing.....on arrival I explained that the operator had miss-understood my cries for help...but the guy just said he would do it anyway as he was here....sure enough he got the special tool out!! Took him aout twenty minutes to get the nuts out and I replaced them with standard nuts.....so problem solved at last...and good one RAC!! I will have to get some new security nuts though.........ask Karl?
