Back In

Back in at renault again. Same steering fault. Knock at slow manouvering speeds. Creaking through steering, Wandering on the road, Doesnt feel positive, Heavy steering..

But once again ive been unable to get the steering to knock on demand...im fighting a loosing battle here.

Itll be sold by christmas at this rate

nightmare, I have heard of a few having faults on the steering column. I think it was Steve at R.Sport that was saying he's had a few with rack problems, maybe drop him a PM and he might be able to point you in the right direction?

You have had right head banger over this!hope you get sorted, might be wise to chop it in for a newer 200 and bang them V3's on it.

Problem with these type of faults is getting it to happen when its there.

Hope it shows up for you this time.

But its getting them to hear/feel the knock. I cant make it do it on demand.

The car feels completely different to what it used to....but to them they dont know how different it is!

Steve how can you read on here about steering racks being a common fault but you take it to numerous garages and they are adement they've never heard of one failing!

Only want it done so i can fit the coilovers!

One thing i will say...if i replace the car over this problem im never going to a small engine...jesus the 1.2s are crap!

After a week with another Renault garage they didnt hear the knock and dont agree that it wanders around and that the steering is heavy.

So the saga continues.

Somebody buy me a 1series

You think you 've got issues . . . . .

I think its not been the same since i drove it

To be honest i can relate to how angry it makes you feel, one thing i did which i would urgest is ask the service manager to take it home for the night , that way it gives him max exposure to the car under a range of opperating conditions .

This is what i had to do with mine although it was brake/abs related , same applies as if there taking it out once a day for 10 mins they are probally not going to feel it.

Its frustrating for them but equally for you .

I feel you pain .

to me that sounds like a faulty suspension/steering ball joint...

had something simliar on a mates megane 225 - it was the lower drivers side perfo-hub swivel - dealers didnt find it - took me about 20mins to find it - jacked up wheels off and steering track rods disconnected - you couldnt move the steering hub it was that seized...

the clio is different and uses 2 ball joints to provide a pivot point

Last week saw another attempt of righting whats wrong with the car.

Booked into track-club for geometry check as although the likes of STS tyres have the hunterhawkeye laser equipment, they dont understand the figures nor the effects they have on the car.

Now it wasnt perfect but it was all within renaults tolerances. He said, "looking at the figures, id say it pulls to the right" to which i shook my head and told him it pulls to the left and he looked puzzled.

He took the car for a test drive and sure enough, on perfectly flat roads it pulls to the left...but not all the time. He also said that the steering felt loads heavier than their 197 track cars that run wider, semi slick tyres and aggressive geo setup. Also agreed that it didnt feel planted and felt vague. Atleast he agreed with me. But didnt know the solution.

Day after i took it to an mot station with the shaking ramps. The guys had it pulling the front end around quite visciously and would you believe, they found no issues. No clonking felt in the rack nothing. Great!

Im really running out of ideas now

Happy New Year Ya'll

Cars been at Renault in KingsLynn since last wedensday looking at the steering and a few other issues...

Clutch they think is ok

Steering heaviness they think is normal

Low temp reading they put down to software issues in the clocks and have replaced the dials

Knocking - Even after the mechanic feeling the significant knock numerous times through the wheel they are unable to diagnose where its coming from and have fed me the "will have to wait for it to worsen" bull****.

How can they struggle to diagnose. They know its been on a mot ramp being shaken to **** under scrutiny. They cant find any nut bolt link thats loose and could cause it. They know of the EVO mag article about the racks being faulty yet they STILL WONT replace it.

Surely a knock, through the the steering, without any loose bolts etc points straight at the rack and column or am i being thick?

bloody hell this must be as frustrating as it gets. My advice would be to have the car checked from a Renault specialist. Mark fish, tdf, ktec 519? have you got any specialists around? or you've done it already?

TDF aren't too far.

Btw I saw a LY200 on the A14 on the 29th December, travelling East near Huntingdon I think. The guy looked over at me, it was about 3pm. Was it you?

Nor is mark fish who specialises in chassis set up so is likely to know his way round very well. Not saying the others dont, just that mark fish may have few more years experience.

dont think so fella, you'd have noticed the CL10 FTW plate instantly im sure.

I do float around the area though.

All very well taking it to a specialist, but what then? If they find an issue, to get it fixed ill have to foot the bill?

Tempted to put it in to 519 as a last ditch attempt as i dont want to get rid but its certainly swaying that way

No, of course not. When I had problems with the steering and Renault Enfield would refuse to do anything about it i took the car to an independent garage, they diagnose the fault, they called the warranty, they authorized the job and i didn't pay a penny. You will have to pay for the investigation though. Small price to pay if you get it sorted in the end...
