Anything off the shelf at Halfords or similar will be a waste of money, it will need to be machine polished with something like a Meguirs compound then polished up after.....

When I had my cambelt done at Reno Tech they told me I didn't need the dephaser doing, these were only an issue on the 172 and 182,s, they had never seen any 197,s that needed this changing?

Thanks Syer, the near side was replaced under warranty when I had the car, typical garage they would only replace the one so it has only done a couple of thousand mile...

I took my 197up to the lads at the garage this morning for an inspection as there was a lack of power and a clunking from the front, it transpires my brakes are binding, discs and pads are shot and the front offside sprig has snapped at mid point, I will sort the discs/pads off ebay but can...

I have a slight oil weep in the same place, mine is the rear crank seal, leaving it until the clutch needs changing..

My offside headlamp needs adjusting so that it sits right to the bumper lines, can this be done or does the bumper have to come off?

Remember to key the surface with 1200 wet and dry if spraying plastic or 800 if spraying metal.

And always 3-4 light coats, don't be tempted to lay it on thick, will take a fortnight to cure!

The new spray paint will be touch dry in an hour but always leave paint/spray a couple of days to fully cure

I have started using hammerite on most refurbs, I used to be a stalwart for primer and top coats but did quite a bit of testing with the hammerite, goes off rock solid. I do a lot of model building so always messing with different sprays/paints...

Mine was scratched also, removed, dismantled and resprayed with Hammerite satin black.

When I had my work done at Reno Tech last year they charged me £410 all in, pretty sure that is still the price on there website, I asked about the dephaser pulley and they said they could not understand why people changed these on the 197,s? Only issues they had were on the 182,s....
