Tried both methods, it was because the allen key hole had rounded in the thread. Sorted with the angle grinder straight through the spring and piston then put the left over piston in the vice and got the nut off with a big breaker bar.

I would say MAF sensor, played about with mine and the slightest movement gets the engine juddering and revving different...

Swapped my standard set up for the cup shocks and springs, if anyone is thinking of doing this themselves don't bother, take it the garage and let them do it, never again!
