I'd have a guess at the exhaust manifold as mine has the same noise and that's what mine was diagnosed as. I don't notice it too much in the winter but during the Summer with the windows down I would definitely describe it as a ticking noise until the revs build and the exhaust drowns it out...

OEM manifold is on the right, which has 2 flexi's and a cat at the bottom. All aftermarket ones (like the one on the left) have a single flexi or even none at all and also won't have a cat attached. If you look down the back of the engine you can see the flexi area.
