Brake Judder

The Clio suffered with fairly violent brake judder at Snetterton last week.

The front brakes are Renault Megane R26 drilled discs. We put those on last year and at the same time ran Ferodo DS 2500 pads. In early July 2022 we changed the front pads to DS Uno's. At Anglesey in July 2022 the brakes were mega with real bite. They performed flawlessly all day.

Fast forward to Snetterton last week with the same set up the brakes were juddering when they were getting warm. It was about 23 degrees C outside and the car has brake ducts fitted. At the start of a new track session when the brakes were cool there was no juddering until the brakes were worked a bit harder after the out lap and then the same problem came back.

The surface of the discs shows that there are score marks, nothing too bad, but if you run your finger over the surface of the discs you can feel with it is not smooth.

We have not taken off the pads yet to have look at them.

Could the combination of a drilled disc and the DS Uno's be causing a problem?

A new set of front Brembo HC front discs is relatively cheap so I am not really bothered about replacing the discs if that could be a quick fix. Alternatively I still have the DS2500s and could put them back on to see if the problem goes away with a late night heavy use on an empty dual carriageway.

Any suggestions? What I would like to do is find what disc will work best with the DS Uno's without offering any judder.

Theoretically drilled discs should help with clearing deposits however DS UNO's are a race pad in comparison to DS2500. I would imagine that the trip home from Anglesey could have been the cause, if they are like 1.11's you have to be very on/off when using them. In my experience once deposited and the pads glazed it can be tricky to clear them.

This might help

To cut a long story short I cooked my brakes on the first run by underestimating the bedding in procedure of ds1.11, so a quick sand (120) and a proper bedding in session has solved the issue, you can see how bad they where before/after cleaning up, the disks also required some clean up (1000 grit)

I’d echo the above.

I had the same issue with DS1.11’s on wet days. Obviously quite difficult to be heavy and positive on the brakes when it’s damp.

Since moved to Mintex F2R and have no bother whatsoever.

I use plain discs with dsuno and luckily haven’t had issue with judder. It might be down to braking style (on for longer not as hard)v ( stamp hard not as long) or the drilled discs. Either way it should be curable with the right treatment. I’ll follow your progress
