New joints.....

Hi Guys and Girls, hope youre all well and happy new year to you all =)

This may have been asked 1001 times, but after a search i can only find vague answers to my question, and i know it will differ from garage and geographical location, but how much would i be looking to pay ROUGHLY to have swivel joints, ball joints, and top mounts changed on my R27? im pretty sure i could do them myself, have all the kit and mostly the know-how, but at the minute its a time vs money situation haha

TIA peeps =)

Dan

Well a lot of stuff has changed in recent times there is a lot of ball joints available now but how good they are I cant say but I have always looked for the genuine Renaultsport ones but saying that I bought the last ones from Raptor6767 on the forum here. I have to say I think his lower hub ball joint seems like the best it has a dust cover stopping dirt corrosion getting into it which should extend the life, my genuine one lasted just over three years before some play started to appear.

Now the thing is pressing out and in ball joints are not as straight forward as it seems I've done it on a floor standing press the units don't sit at right angles so you need to keep an eye on it as if the angle is out you can damage the casting and a bit of heat helps the clearances and reduce pressure required. The lower arm ball joints have appeared for sale in the past year with a little prep heat and modified socket impact gun easy job.

thanks for the info mate, good write up, really appreciate it =), i have a floor stand press also, but have been considering buying one of the large G clamp style ones with all the fittings, never used one personally but they look like a pretty decent bit of kit.

I THINK one of the swivel joints has gone on one side, and the top mount knocking on the other so was kinda going along the lines of rebuilding the lot and making it all nice and new again =)

Did you know which ball joint nut was used in the last video to remove the ball joint from the control arm?

Well I don't know if there are any in your part of the world Peugeot 405 ball joint tool modified internal diameter and teeth width no one seems to be selling the tool with the ball joints which I thought would be a unique selling point. I had the nearside knock the lower arm rear bush distorts allowing the arm to hit the subframe slot it fits in and the top mounts can split normally knock pulling away slow in traffic but the split can only be seen when the weight of the car is on it's wheels, a heavy pothole/upside-down pothole (speed bump) can split the mount.

had a quick check today, i dont actually seem to have any play in the joints, or if i do it is very minimal, but the offside one is defo starting to get the creaking noise, im guessing this is only going to get worse and will need changing? pretty sure the nearside knock is from the top mount

Sorry to drag an old thread up, did you say you had to modify the Sealey ball joint removal tool?

The internal diameter needs increasing and the teeth grinding slightly. If you can weld there are easier ways of getting them out

Cheers mate, I don't have any welding experience so I've ordered the tool and will make it work as you've detailed.

Cheers

You need a lathe to turn out the internal diameter to allow the upper part of the ball joint to fit inside the socket to get the castle teeth to engage the teeth can be altered with a file as they nearly fit anyway.

I haven’t needed to do anything with ID, just had to file inside of 4 lugs down and a little bit on their width Perhaps I don’t have original ball joints or arms fitted.
