Rough clio with strange mot

So recently got hold of a clio 197 made up with the car apart from all its small faults after a extremely time consuming wash the car looks good again I’ve been reading up on the forum about issues and it’s got them all haha pulled the scuttle off to find a swimming pool cleaned the drains out and gave it all a good clean I have rapped some ptfe tape around the sensor on the inlet manifold and it’s got rid of the horrid kangaroo take off by about 90% now the car has a nasty creaking noise when turning showing down or taking off slowly so got it up in the air today to find two knackered top mounts and a snapped coil spring which has been snapped for some time going off the rusty break can’t find any play or worn bushes as yet most worrying part is the car had a mot two days before I picked it up with no advisories yet I’ve found a snapped spring and one tyre showing cords on inner edge hmm (friendly mot) springs to mind I have now owner the car for about 2 weeks and barely drove it with being away at sea also the car must of had a quick clean for sale as I cleaned the inner side of the wheels while they where off and they are silver inside yet anthracite outside haha car is slowly starting to show it’s faults. Can anyone tell me what colour the alloys are supposed to be from factory it’s a red f1 57 plate

Welcome!..

The Factory colour for them wheels are:

IXELL Paint - GRIS MET - 20588

Welcome.

In my experience, owning any kind of R.S. Clio usually means fixing faults as soon as you buy it :tearsofjoy: They do require careful maintenance and I think a lot of people who buy them just don't realise. I bought mine a week ago and it certainly needs a few bits doing.

Hopefully you'll get through all the issues soon!

Hi yes mate I was aware it would need a little love as the mot history shows lots of worn tyres bushes replaced and so on haha so I was ready for getting dirty but wasn’t expecting snapped springs and (f**ked) tyres two days after a mot haha anyway I 100% prefer it over my old focus st3 and look forward to pulling it all apart to find more horrors haha cheers for the reply guys

Broken springs is a funny one I think. If you go back 20-odd years, I never really remember anyone ever talking about springs snapping, but it seems quite common on stuff from the late 90s onwards. I don't know if it's because cars tend to be a bit firmer now, but they seem to break springs for fun once they reach a certain age. My friend just had one on his 197, my old Vectra daily hack had had them done in the past for MOTs, it seems really common.

Most cars would’ve been on leaf spring suspension back then

Yeh I suppose the roads are covered in pot holes sunken grids and so many speed bumps around my area and also like beany said older cars mostly had leaf springs I’ve never seen a snapped leaf spring and I’ve been driving vans for the past few years and loading them to the brim and driving pretty hard haha

Haha yeh I suppose I think leaf springs had gone when I was arriving in the world apart from commercial vans etc

These cars do need more maintenance. I bought mine at 109k and replaced sooooo much, alot towards the end of its life or as a preventative measure. As much as they like being ragged by the scruff of the neck they also like being regularly petted and looked after.

leaf springs are not what they used to be like as most are single/mono leaf not multi that could crack...some are composite material as well

bought mine at 94k and have replaced many many things. Came with a non RS spring in one side at the rear, so sat strangely high at the back at one side

I paid too much for my Meglio, and spent as much again, getting it to where it is now. There is always something to take care of on these cars, but stick with it, the car will reward you on road, and track.

Just ordered a spring for the wife's 42k mile 10 plate RS200, the other side failed last year, but the previous owner only replaced one side.
Worth stripping and regreasing the wiper mechanism if the scuttle was full of water, as these sit in it and rust.
Also may be worth replacing the pollen filter as water can get in to this too, which loads the heater blower motor and burns out the wiring to the rheostat!
