Cullen's cup - Spa trip update

So D Day has arrived

GEARBOX REMOVAL

Car as she came off the eurotunnel looks grubbier in real life

I now fully understand why no one does a write up on DIY gearbox removal, its not hard just time consuming.

Gearbox out on garage floor by myself in just over 5 hours, now i know the correct process i could probably get it out and in within 5 hours.

The failed slave looking fooked

And for those who havent much of an idea here is the new with the old for comparison.

Im not returning to the garage til saturday where the box will go back in along with the new coilover install.

In the meantime my oils turned up

I went for
Fuchs titan santo 75w-80
And just topping up with motul rbf600 which was already installed prior to spa.15560476912175515285443848088077.jpg

glad all is going to the plan..however,i must say I hated the box oil and it had to come out very soon after i'd put it in..think someone else had the same problem...
hope its not your case..

What fluid are you running now?
I chose it because i ran it in my mk1 track car for many years for which also had a quaife in it.

What were your issues with it?

i've sold mine just before xmas..was running a meg conversion with an r26 box fitted with LSD..
just the gear changes were very sloppy..felt like my syncros were gone but obviosly they were just fine..opted for Castrol syntrans i think..straight away my car felt miles better with 0 gear issues..
not sure why..if you have positive feedback then maybe it was just me..hope it helps

Great thread! I think Spa is definitely something I’m going to have to do!

Lots of inspiration for me and my 200!

I bought ktec coilovers as i really didnt want to fork out 1k for non dampening coilovers like the billys or the spax plus after alot of research it seems they are no better or worse for having issues.

I did find 2 massive dents in my cup rear damper so glad i have changed the suspension.

2 big dents

Seized top nut on the front struts meant i had to make this dodgy contraption.

20190427_172836.jpg

Ktec coilover install quality seems good nothing out the ordinary definatly stiff then cup suspension so that is a bonus, i spoke with ktec about the cheapness of the coilover and they simply stated its due to them being made in house and designed by themselves and not having extra overheads, time will tell i suppose.

Car back on its wheels still wearing the muck and rubber from spa.

20190503_173214.jpg

Car needs an alignment along with the subframe now.

My new bucket seat has been lost in transit so ive been seatless for 3 weeks now.

Car will also be getting a map in the coming weeks, so lots of things happening.

Interested to hear your opinion on the coilovers. I too want some but don't want to pay b14 money lol

I need to do my gearbox! Was it much of a job? Just done one on a friends E36 and it wasn't too bad, debating whether to do the clio one myself or not

If your mechanically minded then yes go ahead and do it. It took me about 15 hours from start to finish but that was everything done by myself even getting the box back on the block.

The best way if your doing it on the floor is to remove both subframes, when removing the front subframe make sure you put a cable tie through the fan cowling to support the rad and fan, unbolt the steering rack and leave it hanging there (its ok it wont drop or mess it up) undo the wishbone from the subframe and release the 3 top mount mounting bolts remove susupension arm and suspend (the reason behind this method is so you can get the shaft out with out splitting the hub as we all know that is a c#$t of a job)

Support sump with a jack and undo the gearbox mount under the battery tray.

Then release the top engine torque bracket (the one near the oil filler cap) so the engine will tilt enough to get the box to miss the chassis leg. And with the help of a second jack it should just come away nicely.

If you want any pointers or get stuck drop me a message, ill drop you my number and help you out.

Nice one thanks mate! That's a good idea dropping the wishbone and shock/hub together, i wouldn't have thought of that.

I'm sure i will when the time comes haha! I'll have help like but still!

Well that was a ballache

After 4 weeks of waiting from GSM performance, alot of phone calls and emails only to be told the truth by DHL that my seat has been lost or stolen at the shiping docks #fuming

I decided to get a refund (still waiting) and scour facebook, within 3 days i had this picked up

Sabelt gt140 for £120 i dont think its even been sat in, its pristine condition i also got side mounts from a good friend of mine for the cost of a few beers.

Just need to get it fitted before anglesey on the 3rd of june

Well what a load of toosh

Started the strip out while i wait for my new seat mounts

20190520_161102.jpg

All was going well til i messed up and smashed my rear window trying to de wiper it.

On the plus side looks like ill br buying the perspex windows sooner than id have imagined.

20190520_165629.jpg

Managed to get my OMP wheel on and its mated to a clio 182 boss for those who are interested.

2 steps forward 1 step back

Update:

New boot is on, not a hard job just a bit time consuming taking loom, badges and spoiler off.

During

After

IMG-20190525-WA0013.jpeg

The demon tweeks universal mounts are very good quality for the money.

20190521_163856.jpg

Seat is in
Ive got some 10mm thick ally strips that im going to mount under the bucket seat mounts, just a tad low at the mo.

IMG-20190525-WA0008.jpeg

I also decided cut and shave my sprint spoiler
I hated how chunky the end bits were and how it wraped around the centre brake light.

Its almost a cup spoiler and sprint spoiler combined now.

IMG-20190526-WA0019.jpeg

After 2 months of the car getting worked on the wheels had seen better days the brake dust had eaten into the wheel paint so i had to give them a respray (cup racer style)

20190526_155704.jpg

White wall tyre anyone

20190526_155659.jpg

And on the car

IMG-20190526-WA0023.jpeg

IMG-20190526-WA0021.jpeg

Now the carpet has gone i realised my feet sit too low to the pedals, the original underlay contains a hard bit to level the floor.

A quick measure a few cuts and a couple of brackets bent in the right place and this is what i have.

20190526_180907.jpg
Before it gets bolted in i have aload of different size P clips to run the looms neatly.

Quick question for anyone reading what size thread are the bolts that hold the bottom of the seat belt brackt to the sil, my regular size eyelets are too big.
Can i get eyelets with a smaller thread size?
