Exhaust/silencer delete + Remap

Hi, I've been thinking of getting a stainless exhaust for my Clio as the standard one sounds a bit too stealth/non existent to me.
After looking on here and elsewhere online it seems that the exhaust does nothing for performance just a better sound so would it be better to get the centre silencer deleted and a remap instead of the exhaust?
That way it would sound better and hopefully drive a little better too - or that's what I'm hoping! Or does the silencer removal just mess up the car?

Removing the stock silencer is a very marmite mod. Some people love it and others find it overly raspy. It's meant to introduce quite a lot of pops and bangs/crackle if that's your thing and does actually sound quite loud.

I'm sure i remember reading somewhere someone saying it made the car really droney but don't hold me to that. From the one's ive heard they sound quite tinny, but it's all down to personal preference!

And it will create a flat spot but if you're planning on mapping anyway, there's nothing to worry about with that one!

That's the tricky thing, when I've looked on YouTube the silencer delete videos vs different exhausts it doesn't seem that different.
Just gets confusing in the end, hence the post on here.
So would a new exhaust system create a flatspot and require a remap too?
Alternatively (performance wise) would a car with a standard exhaust benefit more from a remap than deleted silencer/exhaust and mapped car if the map is being used to make up for the flat spot?

I think either way if you're getting a map you're going to gain more from it whether that be aftermarket exhaust/just remapping stock.

But if you do get an aftermarket exhaust a map will be more beneficial for power gains. Not that they're important really

Not all aftermarket exhausts give a flat spot either. Akrapovic supposedly dont, my oreca has the slightest one that is barely noticeable at all.

So exhaust and remap would give better power than standard exhaust with or without silencer delete?

I'm looking at about £500 budget wise so thinking a performance filter, silencer delete and map may end up being the best option.

I'd say so? But i can't say i've ever seen a mapped car with stock exhaust so i'm not sure. But yeah that sounds good!

I took my R27 up to EFI in December for a power test which confirmed it was stock bar a KTEC manifold and intake. I'm going back up next week on the 30th to have it remapped with a race cat. I've not changed anything else as I'm wary of noise limits when hillclimbing and also, having come from an OEM car company powertrain division, it's unlikely the stock exhaust is going to be a gas flow restriction unless I went FI, so the only advantage for me might be a weight save. Either way, I'll let you know what happens.

The noise with a mid silencer delete is loud. Ive been in one and its drony at anything above 35 really. If you want some noise without it being ASBO loud is a non resonated exhaust like a Scorpion system. Any modification to the exhaust will need remapping anyway to get the best. Saying that, Id still map a stock car as I suspect the flat spot is due to mapping to meet EU regs but worsened by changes to the exhaust system.

You will save in the region of 4-7kg depending upon system as stock unit is heavy. And reliability due to stock unit being made of cheese.

I took mine to EFI on Saturday. The baseline had been set in December on a KTR downpipe and intake with standard rear end and it made 198 at the flywheel.
I swapped out the second cat for a race version (200 cpi rather than 600 of a production unit) and again, elected to leave the cat back section as standard.
Chris ran it up again to confirm what we saw in December and it made pretty much the same power. Plainly the second cat isn't that restrictive - but he commented in his experience the pre cat mounted in stock downpipes was the main culprit for sapping power. The weight reduction was just under 1.5Kg.
A bit of a remap later on 98RON and I've now got 204 at the flywheel, a cleaner tip-in on the throttle and an extra 200 rpm on my limiter which could pay dividends when running up the hills this season.
There's a little more cabin volume from the smaller cat but tone wise, it's still much the same as before so I'm really happy.
