Clio Won't Start

So took her out for a little drive at the weekend. I came into a national speed limit and took it all the way up in second and third. At the top of third, I heard a bang and immediately thought I've snapped my belt so I pulled over and switched the engine off. Before I turned the engine off, I had an ignition check warning light but now theres no warning lights at all.

To cut a long story short I had it towed back to the house and started to strip to see if it was the belt, the viewing window beneath the engine mount is the best idea renault have ever had!! Luckily this appeared to be in full working order and the engine cranks fine. I then put it on axle stands in gear to check the flywheel and geartrain. Again, all appeared to be fine and the wheels turned. Next, I took a plug out and couldn't see a spark. I'm waiting for a mate to come round to plug it in and see what codes come up, but I'm a little lost as to what it could be!?

A mate has said it may have slipped a couple of teeth on the belt and the timing is out, but surely it would just be pinking a little and that doesn't explain the lack of spark. Do our engines have clearance between the valves and piston?

Any Ideas guys? It's a 197 cup on a 58 plate.

Yup, still plenty of tension in it. That's the belt on the rhs of the block that you can see isn't it??

if the belt timing has slipped they bend the valves....(compression test to check)

had all the plugs out? not a dropped valve?

no spark - possible tdc sensor faulty

Are there any timing marks to line up the two cams with? I can only see one dot on front cam.

I don't have a pressure gauge to do a compression test with right now.

only slots in the backs of the cams - remove 2 rubber seals at rear of head - slots should be horizontal with offset to the bottom and 1-4 at tdc

Saw them as I was packing away tonight. Will take a look tomorrow night. Cheers dude!

Cam belt and timing looks fine tonight, I'm getting fuel to the block so not fuel pump, I'm guessing tdc sensor might be to blame, so going to get a cam kit and sensor and see how we get on, right laugh!!

Ended up being the crank position sensor, although when I took it out it had been taken out by something. My guess is one of the fingers from then pressure plate which is now rattling inside the bell housing.

Engine is almost out as I'm going to do my cam belt at the same time.

lucky then as it usually holes the gearbox casing

Weird thread bump but I think this has just happened to me.

Broke down and wouldnt start . AA diagnosed crank sensor and towed me to garage. They changed the sensor and when I went to pick car up got me with a "did you know you have two small holes in your gearbox"

Now have a light rattle after doing a few miles

Think I will get away with just changing pressure plate ? Is this common ?

most likely a spring out of the centre plate hub being thrown around the bellhousing & wearing it away

Hmm .either way need box off don't I :worried:

Was driving so well/normal i was wondering if it was old damage until I heard it rattle after doing about ten miles today

yep box out...fit a full clutch kit as well dont skrimp as not a quick job to do!

What's a good price for one ? Go Renault or aftermarket ? Have always used Sachs on other cars without problem

jsut scan internet for deals places like reanult parts direct think oem is valeo kit
