Nürburgring Nordschleife Nissan GTR Crash / Renault Clio

I'd love to do a lap of the 'ring but it's stuff like this that puts me off. And I hear the costs are astronomical if you bin it? Recovery costs, repairs to track and barriers etc.?

Someone did tell me you could hire a car from the 'ring, and that covered you for everything?

Your never covered for everything at the Ring lol. There's always an excess or something to pay.

Barrier charges are €250 every Metre, but the catch is you can only buy 4 at a time.. So basically €1,000 a Metre..

Hence why the barrier repair company can afford to run 4 race cars lol.

Just go and treat the place with respect. Worse thing you can do is click start on the timer going under the Bridge. Just enjoy the track without setting a time, also keep plenty of eyes in the rear view mirror for what's coming up fast. First thing in the morning seems to be the quietest period that you can relax a little more on track. Get there for the opening time, then when it's busy in the afternoon, park up and enjoy spectating of all those supercars tanking it around.

Could you call it a racing incident? Well no because it's not a race but the term covers the same principle. Both parties played a part in this knock. The Clio made a rather silly move but he was obviously trying to learn the 'racing line' and that was a pretty silly/late dive down the inside just to try and stay with the Porsche.

It's really not difficult if you use common sense. I've been on 5 trips now and never once came close to being hit/hitting something.

The again on an "open toll road" would you expect a gtr to come flying up the inside of you? The Clio wasn't indicating right so clearly had no idea there was a third car and took the corner as normal.

Having been to the ring a good few times before (not to brag but around 24 times in 11 years) you are so wrong with this and on other posts

This is germanay were they drive on the other side of the road so there was no diving up the inside, it's a two lane, public toll road amd you have to treat it like any other german road so keep to the right unless overtaking.

The GTR was the faster car so was in effect overtaking the other car, the clio the clio driver was doing right by keeping right but, i can only assume did not see the GTR hence the turn in, sorry but it was the clios fault. The police would have attended this incident because it is an accident on a public road and faced with the camera evidence or any witness evidence will point the finger of blame towards the clio driver.

Please dont let the videos you see put you off the place, as a petrolhead you'll love the place, it's just a great place to be for a petrolhead but please please please read the rules and stick to them, they are on big signs in the grunne holle car park were you buy your 'toll' ticket, european law dictates you need insurance to drive in europe, most uk policies give you 90 days of cover to drive in europe and this covers you to drive on public roads in germany, yes its a grey area about not being covered on 'the ring' but as i say, european law says your insurance covers you, if this was an english car involved your insurance would have to pay out or help you claim against the other, what they do after that is a bit of an unknown.

Please don't call it a track day or treat it like a track day, there are separate events for that, it's a public road, there are acctually a couple of speed limits on there and if the law wanted to be funny or you had a mishap on those parts you could be in bigger trouble.

And yes it is bad to start the stopwatch under the bridge to time yourself, i'm not 100% but this also might be illegal but if you did have an incident and the police turned up to find a stopwatch on your dash the length of your stay in Germany might last longer than you wanted

?

Go there you'll love it but keep those thoughts in mind when your on that road and it'll focus the mind, keep your mind on the task in hand.

The 'rules' in the car park are all translated into english so there really is no excuse.

I've had a spin there in my Alfa and i'll be perfectly honest i **** myself but was very fortunate in missing the barriers but i know the risks and i still keep going, that was 5 years ago.

You need to read your insurance doc carefully. I know 100% mine states in the exclusions 'Nurburgring Nordschleife'.

As for costs if you crash:

These are a few years old now but give you a ball park figure. Also armco comes in 10m sections and is 3 sections high, they can't just replace 1m if that's all that gets damaged.

Having said all that none of this put me off going. Was fantastic!

Yeah echo what others have said, go there, take in the atmosphere, watch lots of nice cars flying round and enjoy it , its a brilliant but daunting stretch of tarmac. Been twice before (past 2 years) and going again at the end of June in the 197. Can't wait !

Isn't it against their rules to record yourself anyway? When I was down there a few years back they were stopping people from going on with GoPros etc?

As said above, they banned filming for a bit, and wanted you to hire a camera from them, and they would then watch the full recording before releasing the footage to you. It didn't last long haha!

Re above video skip to 4:00 as this is when you first see the Clio involved. Actual collision is about 10 seconds later.
