The mysterious 'knock'

Seems my 197 has developed a pronounced knock on the N/S thats getting worse it seems.

Running KW V1's, has the wheel off yesterday, nothing obvious. Getting Birchdown to look at it in the near future. Drives fine @ speed, just seems to happen over slow speed stuff, like speed humps/uneven broken surfaces etc. I'm thinking top mount.... Any other thoughts? Or will this also go down as another knock with no known cure :worried:

You need to check the piston going into the main body of the shock. That can come lose. You will need a pin spanner to tighten this. My gf's has a pic as she had this issue with her v1s on her st.

Il get her to post a pic

Also check the arb drop links, grab hold of them and give them a good wiggle to see if they knock

Please do! There are no leaks or anything

Cheers

Did Adam not have this problem with these on his 200? Can't remember for sure but wasn't it something to do with a bolt not tightening up enough?

Not sure, its something thats developed over the last few weeks really. Full strip down of the n/s methinks

I would say it's a loose topmount mate. 17mm cranked ring spanner and a 5mm Allen key make sure they are tight then go get it tracked up

Had a play today. Had the jack under it, and 99% sure its the top mount. When raising/lowering the jack you can hear the noise. So whipped off the cover under the scuttle, and you can 'feel' the knock/creak when adjusting the jack higher/lower. So hopefully its just that!

Any idea on price of a new mount??

Have you tried tightening the nut on the top of the shock, the central one under the cover?

Top mount will be a complete bitch of a job to replace, check my guide on changing front springs for an idea.

Oh I know what's involved . Deffo coming from that area, its actually more of a sharp creak, than a knock.... It could be something to do with the spring mounted in the kw spring cup, something catching, it needs stripping down that's for sure

Sorted, strange one!!

Was a top mount/nut issue. We replicated the noise by jacking up the car, until the wheel just off the ground, then putting a fook off big lever bar under the wheel. By levering the bar up and down replicating the suspension moving up/down you could hear the noise clear as day.

Nut was tight, but you could spin the nut/piston around with a spanner..... Comparing it to the O/S, that was pretty much solid. The problem was the nut was tightened down onto the KW strut, but there was a couple mm of play between the nut and top mount. So, we spaced it out with a washer, tightened the nut down again, job done. No more creaking. Will monitor it over the next few weeks, but seems spot on now. Strange as the O/S is exactly the same but didn't need a washer??

Big thanks to Steve at these guys.

Seriously if any one is in the NW, you need to be going to these guys, RS Clio specialist, know them inside out. Very popular over on CS

Yup. Thats the exact same problem Adam had with his V1s. He had to make a wee washer/spacer also.
