response times

the sites response times are in short... f-ing awful;. its making browsing painful and unbearable.

and yes ive tried it on two different explorers. and yes ive cleared out all the cookies and all that.

Tried turning it off and back on again?

 Sorry couldn't resist.

It's not helped by the hosting being US based.

Have to agree with Jonesy on this...at home im on BT infinity optic fibre which is 76mb and at work im not too sure, but both seem to 'lag'

Click..wait..wait..wait and it loads

Not a complaint and i don't really care, just an observation

I was having issues at lunch time (about 13.30) at work but seems OK now when I'm at home 10mb fibre connection at work and 30mb at hoe

Must say mines fine, almost instant.

Buy a better wifi box lol

Only time I have issues is when using tapatalk on BT fibre but there are a number of complaints about mobiles via BT fibre so put it down to that and that it's the same surfing the net via BT fibre.

Generally fine for me, although I do think this forum would benefit from a massive clear out and huge "spring clean".

But we won't be doing that any time soon.

i noticed the board being slow since the last major design change. Latency to the server is dreadful and throughput is crap as well. Also it seems caching is kinda disabled, as i see the banner pictures loading every day. may do some profiling if anyone is interested...

http://www.rsmegane.com/forum.php is a good measure to put it against.

Seems the part this forum falls over isn't transfer speeds but response time to requests.

ive got 60meg with virgin. over 1k spent on my pc. i know for certain its not me.

BTW kev, got no input, better off saying nothing

Like i said, it needs a spring clean. This forum's server files are a mess, and the database is huge. Perhaps something we'll tackle later in the year.

the issue with the database (its well over a gig) is we don't like pruning posts or images which would happen.

tbh when i'm on the laptop i see no lag.

the reason why the banner reloads is how its implemented (a random image in a set number of images is displayed), technically they said it wasn't possible to implement it how we have so i wrote some custom code and got it working as it should and not as VB / 3rd party add-ons (it doesn't look right in our opinion) do it by chopping or resizing.

If the DB is presumed to be an issue has anyone checked? A DB of a GB is not very big in the grand scheme of things so it'd be better to test that it's slow before messing about pruning data.

I'm not a DBA by trade but it's not a massive chore to capture some common queries and profile them.

I made some changes after this thread, i was wondering how the forum is for you now and as of late? Do you feel the site response times have improved?
