Lucifers Ultra Red 197

Ouch... a lot of people make mistakes about the the cones on the 200 diffuser.. I’ve seen plenty of post where people have melted them!

Accept, learn and move on. Hopefully you get your brake issue sorted

Yeah, it's a bit shit, but I really enjoyed the track day regardless so i'll no doubt end up spraying the 197 diffuser gloss black and keeping it on.

From the looks of things its defo the rears that are the problem so i'm thinking a stripdown is on the cards and a refresh of the calipers too.

I was going to be buying coilovers this month but Brakes first!

Looking to book Cadwell next in June so plenty of time.

You not fancying Donington in June ?

So quick update...at a bit of a crossroads really.

Car is being a t**t

First thing in the morning it just won’t go into gear, at all!

After 10-15mins of warm up it’ll then go into gear albeit really notchy.

Then when it’s fully warm after 5-10mins driving it’s perfect.

I’ve had it serviced two days ago with full brake fluid change and bleed in case I boiled it on track.

Also had the gearbox oil dropped and changed but that’s not made any improvement.

Bit stuck on where to go from here? I’ve read quite a few topics but telltale signs of master cylinder leaking in the footwell etc... aren’t there.

Potentially the slave unit is leaking onto the clutch in the house?

Starting to get annoyed!

I’d love to just drop a meg engine and box in but if I can potentially fix it as it is for a couple of hundred then that makes more sense!

Could it be time to just relegate the car to track only work? Hmmmm

sorry to hear about your issues..i would see if the linkages are in place first..then,hated part, subframe off and see whats going on in the box...
hope you get it sorted soon

Thought id give this thread an update seeing as I've paid my membership and im always reading on topics but never updating my own.

So after throwing my toys out of the pram i booked the car in with Mark at midlands renault specialists to get the car back on the road.

He found the following:

  • Gearbox synchros 3rd and 4th had worn
  • Gearbox slave cylinder burst
  • Clutch master cylinder packed in

Nice!

As ive grown attached to the thing i stumped up a reasonable amount and everything is smooth as silk with the added bonus of ATE superblue running through the brakes and clutch too!

Just need to do refurb the rear calipers with new discs and pads and we're set for a september 6th evening visit to cadwell!

On hols at the mo but will post up fresh pics soon!

Glad to be back in the red clio beast!

Also big shout to Mark at Midlands Renault Specialists! Unreal speed and quality of work. He had the subframe off and the box out in an hour, probably would have been back on the road in three if it hadn't have been for the clutch master cylinder.

Couldn't get a new one for that day so let me borrow his black 197 for a few days to get me back to Peterborough!

Top Guy! Well recommended if your near Worksop!

I think I saw you there! (Looking slightly stressed sat on a stool looking at your phone?) Very nice Ultra Red Clio by the way!! Looked a lot cleaner than mine.
Mark now sorted all my steering problems and also sorted the cup shocks with Grams springs. Feels like a totally different car now!!
Top bloke!

Ahh yes i did see yours!

I was trying to suss how i was getting home after the bad news! But all is well!

Thanks! Ive got a few plans for it coming up once the brakes are done!.

I bet the car feels like a different beast now!

Some quick pics of the gearbox work and it being cleanish on the drive.

When I have a spare moment I need to get out with the camera, but house renovation at the same time means time is tight.

Picked up some new pagid rear discs and brembo pads from ECC in their end of July sale...£130 I was well happy with that.

Anything else I need to be aware of when changing the rears before I get cracking? I know the fronts you might as well get new pins but how about the rears?

Great thanks for the link!

I'll put some pics up when i've done them.

Calipers need to be painted Red and I need to do the door bullets!

There is good instructions for rear discs in how-to section:

http://www.clio197.net/threads/change-rear-discs.5999/

But i would say that those 18mm bolts which hold brake caliber carrier are easy to open with long breaker bar and 1/2" socket.
I prefer a long 18mm spanner or use a 18mm normal ring spanner with an open end on the other with a 19mm ring spanner in its open end to double the length of the spanner, 18-20” normally and way better leverage

Good job on this, these cars need more maintenance than a regular car thats for sure. Car looks great on black 197 wheels and spacers!

Did you go for a stock Renault slave or a metal one? I am going to get my clutch/flywheel/release bearing/slave/fluid changed but wondering about a metal slave instead of the OEM plastic one.

They sure do!

Just broke the gearstick... So the plastic surround that has the reverse sleeve... Damn... Anyone got a part number?

Still driveable just a bit awkward going from reverse to 1st.

As for the clutch slave im not sure i think it was just the standard plastic jobby that came in the clutch kit!
