197: Insurance dilemma

Hi guys just thought id make a thread to get an opinion from some of you guys.

I got my 197 in march whilst still on my first year of insurance and moved it over from my old 1.2 Punto (which i paid £1600 to insure) to the 197 and had to pay a extra £800 to insure it from march until august when my original policy runs out.

Ive been shopping around for quotes and the lowest im getting is around £2400(with a black box) for another years insurance on my 197 even though i would have 1 years NCB and have held my licence for nearly 3 years (im also 21).

Its making me consider moving on from the clio for a few years. Atleast until the insurance becomes more reasonable or more affordable for me. Its a bit strange because i got a quote for a Audi TT Quattro 3.2 V6 and it was only £1500, same story with a Lexus IS 250 V6.

Doesnt really make sense to me that my little Clio is £1000 more to insure than a 3.2L V6 Audi TT :worried:

Do you think i should just move on for now?

If i were to move on how much should i expect to get for my 197?

Its a 56 plate in nimbus grey with FSH, 2
panoramic sun roof
xenon headlamps including headlight washers + dedicated fixed cornering lights
cabasse 6 cd audio system
auto lights & wipers
climate control
start button
keyless entry
cruise control

I think the only option it could be missing is cup pack, recaros and auto folding mirrors. Its also done 71k Miles and its just had new front discs and pads.

If you have been trying online comparison sites then i would try more specialist insurers.

Insurance is very much specific to individual circumstances however for me Adrian Flux were by far the cheapest ( i wont tell you how much, it will upset your day, based on your £2.4k quote) however give them a try, they are also a site trader too @DAN@ADRIAN FLUX

@jordan94 - you're mental paying that for insurance! I pay £290 fully comp btw :tongueout:

You should definitely shop around, you should get it cheaper although you're insurance won't really come down that much until you're over 25.

I'd get a few years experience under your belt tbh. Saddens me too say.

The he reason the Audi will be so much cheaper is its risk factor..

Have you tried brokers and specialists like Greenlight? They only insure over 21s

Best thing to do is get on the phone to your insurer.

State your budget and hopefully you get a handy call centre operative who will be able to advise you on how your quote can be made cheaper.
For example having a start date at least 2 weeks in the future can reduce your quote.
Sometimes removing additioal drivers can reduce the cost although you may have thought otherwise.

My renewal price from elephant sent to me by E-mail was £2420 and i ended up paying £820 after 3 phone calls.

I've used greenlight, would recommend. Not sure what the deal is with clios but got discount on my fiesta for being an STOC member. Worth mentioning you are in an owners club just in case.

Yes, 100% you should phone them.
I phoned my insurance company when my renewal was due, they quoted me £120 a month, managed to get it down to £85 a month
Im also with elephant, so maybe it might be worth giving them a call?

Thanks for the advice guys, it's not due for renewal until the end of August so I'll give my insurance company a ring at the start of August and see how much it will be and if it's too much still I'll try some of the specialist insurers

Jordan, I had the same problem so I put my bird on my insurance (She's 24 driving since 17) and it made it go down quite a bit. Im 23 and driving for a year and still pay 1500£ though it also depends where you live, because at my old house the insurance was a lot higher. Try asking your Mum or Dad to be a named driver as it might bring it down.

At the moment I am with 1st Central as they were the cheapest without the black box.

Just to throw another name into to ring, I used AVIVA. They dont show up on comparison sites, but they beat the best Gocompare insurance (~£600) quote by £200 bringing the AVIVA quote in at £401.... also grabbed £60 cashback using QuidCo so that was just the icing on the cake.

Thanks guys any tips on what to say to them when on the phone to bring the price down?

the £2500 quote was also with my dad on the insurance who has been driving for 30 years and has 25+ years NCB so god knows what it will be if he wasnt on it because surely with him on it that is bound to bring it down significantly?

ive been putting anywhere from 5000-10,000 miles annually
keeping it on my drive at night
fully comp £500 excess
social domestic pleasure use

tried getting a quote for Aviva online to test the waters... http://puu.sh/pUa3h/f4b5c00ecb.png

i think ill just give them a ring closer to the time

It may be cheaper to not have your dad on the policy strangely enough. I'm 21 and when I took my dad off my policy, it reduced it by £300 which was a surprise. Always worth asking the call staff to try different combinations to see which gives the best price.

Don't worry about Aviva either. Some companies are picky about postcodes. I had the same response from several specialists too but stayed with Diamond in the end as no one could match their quote. The admiral group are good for young drivers.

Hmmm unfortunately there's too many variables on insurance!

Only way i could get insured going up from a Corsa C 1.2 was to pay upfront, about £961.

I am however 24 years old!

Just be honest with them and tell them its too expensive, and you would like to look at options to bring the price down, nothing wrong in that.
They are in a sales role, so they should be trying to make any deal more attractive to you to clinch the sale. Drop Adrian Flux a PM on here (see post #2).
Good luck

Insurance is fact-based and that's where the premiums of course come from. There's not a lot else you can say to them to try and bring it down - what montana suggests is your best bet though and most companies have wiggle room in the prices to try and win the business.

In some cases insurers load their premiums up because they don't really want the business - they try and make it so expensive that the buyer just walks away. They do this usually if they view it as a particularly high risk. That could explain why certain insurers quote ridiculous prices. There are always companies that will cover you, but as has been said, shop around and talk to them to discuss what you need

Try adding as many drivers as you can using Gocompare etc. then ring up with your quote reference and ask them to play around with taking people on and off. They can see infront of them exactlly what each person is costing or saving to be on and most call centre guys especially at Admiral/diamond/elephant are honest enough to tell you if they know you need a lower premium.

For Example, I had my Dad on mine only and rang up and asked them to add my mum. This went through fine and reduced the cost by £100 leaving me with a £980 premium. They rung me the day after to tell me that they had found out my Mum had an awareness course so i said ok remove her. They then said if i remove both of them my premium would go down to £820 so i was left confused but happier

Thanks for being so helpful guys, checked my postcode and the area is D. :worried: ill give this post a update in august when i get some quotes thanks
