Hello! What should I buy?

Hi,

Brand new member looking for some advice! Looking to buy a Clio 200 and have up to £8k to spend.

Was wondering if there was anything in particular I should be looking out for? I have heard about the gearbox synchros for example - does that mean if the gearbox hasn't been done previously I should be very cautious? Does it affect all 200s?

I know the 200's I'm looking at will be at least 5 years old. How big a deal is it if they haven't had there timing belts done in that time?

I'm also keen to get a ff with Recaros if possible. Big question is to cup or not to cup? Would either of these be a good shout:

Thanks in advance for your help!

I was waiting for the right one to come along for a while. In the end I was lucky I found a ff with cup chassis , Recaros , cup spoiler , speedlines , 33k miles for 8k . Be patient

Welcome to the forum

To answer some of your points:

1. Although there are a number of cases of gearboxes failing and needing replacing, there are also a lot of cars that have done a lot of miles and have shown no signs of gearbox troubles. By no means does it affect all 200s. As I've put in another recent post, it seems to be just down to luck whether or not boxes need fixing.

2. Belts need to be done at the 5 year/72k miles and is essential really. If the car you're looking at is due it but hasn't been done, then be cautious - it is fairly costly to have the work done (~£500 from an RS specialist), so take that into account with the for sale price. Or walk away and go for one that's had the work done.

3. Cup or non-cup is down to personal preference really. If you plan to do a lot of trackdays the Cup may be best suited to your needs.

Good luck in the search and don't hesitate to ask if you need any more info
