Hello! Newbie-ish

POTM Winner - March 2017
Hello all!

I bought a 197 Team F1 a few months back.

Car was great for the first 2 months. Now my gearbox has gone haha!

I get whining & crunching. If I wanted a whiner, I'd of stuck with the Mrs

Been quoted £700 to get a rebuild, the car is on 46k. Something tells me the prat that had it before, didn't look after it v well.

The sensor in the box has gone as well I think, start stop button doesn't like the fact that you're in neutral to start the car, I have to knock the stick to the right :/

Thanks for reading my rant  Just thought I'd say hi haha!

Hi Mark and welcome aboard.

Chocolate gearboxes are one of the failings of these cars. It's been discussed with prices and specialists very recently....

Where are you based exactly ?

Welcome along! You'll have to get some pics up for us. Got much planned for her?

Unfortunately as said above, the gearboxes really are made of chocolate, mine was rebuilt recently on my 2010 Clio 200 with only 25k miles on the clock, so it might not be the case that the previous owner didn't look after her.

My rebuild was £660, so you might want to shop around a little bit?

Where are you based? If you're anywhere near Manchester I used 'Tameside Transmissions'.

Hello welcome. I have a Team F1 on 87k with no big gearbox problems other than a little stiffness in the cold. I'd say you have been very unlucky to have severe issue on those amount of miles.

I did a bit of reading up after I bought the car, its better than the car I was going to buy with their temperamental engines haha! I'm based in Hull and the only reputable one is local, the rest are 50-100 miles out. I don't fancy giving my car to someone that isn't 10 minutes away.

Thanks  As soon as I bought it, I bought a headunit, scorpion cat back. I then had the front badge and grills sprayed gloss black, I put a new sunstrip on and had the diffuser sprayed also. I've also de-wipered it.

I'm planning on lowering it ever so slighty, cup spoiler, 10 spoke alloys with side skirts and front lip. Maybe map it to get rid of flats spots, but first gearbox

I experienced cold shifts, so I got some 75w 80 I think it was Renault ELF stuff and its been fine in the cold  I'm sure once its fixed the car will be like new again

Welcome along! Sorry to hear about your problems, did you buy it from a garage ? I'd be taking it back if the gearbox went after only 2 months.

Look forward to seeing some pictures!

It's not covered within the warranty I had a check, I got shafted really. However, I've got the most of money saved for the box, only got the rest to save now.

I'll have to get a progress thread up soon!

Think of it this way; once the gearbox is sorted it's one of the core components of the car you shouldn't have to worry about failing for a good 10 years... provided you treat her well  lol.

Welcome in mate. I think it's just your luck with these car. Mileage goes for nothing there are cars with high miles with no issues and low mileage car on their 2 or 3 gearbox problem. Stick with it if you like the car, it will be worth the teething problems.

It'll be getting a service every year, my last car drove like it'd just come out the factory & it had 100k on it!

Oh yes, definitely going to sticking with it, lovely car to drive! Makes me smile every morning

While I'm here... what's the best photo uploading website? Tried using imgur but that's a load of dogs goolies!

What's wrong with Imgur? I've never had any problems with it.

You upload to imgur and then get the bb code tag thing which you can copy directly from an image (puts the [ img ] tags either side of the url) paste it straight into a message in here and it should load it in when you post.

Simples.

Welcome Mark. Sorry your first part of ownership isn't ideal, you'll be back to loving it when you get it sorted though!

I'll be putting some up shortly, keep an eye out

Welcome to the forum Mark  as the other guys have said, sorry to hear that you've had those problems so soon into ownership. It's great that it hasn't put you off though, they are tremendous cars to have!

I went through the normal ball joint, cracked manifold, brakes needed servicing etc issues early in my ownership - on a low mileage 2010 year 200.

So miles isn't everything with these cars and a record of good servicing possibly more important.

Then again - you can always be unlucky however hard you try to do your homework.

Bottom line is though - like you- mine makes me smile every morning I jump in it.

I've been in a company car since last Sat and I CANT WAIT for Clio time tomorrow now

Good luck with your box issues and getting sorted.
