Can I use 225/45/R17 tyres

I don't like the stretch look of the tyres on my 200t, I was considering going wider when they need replacing. They're 17s too.

I actually need some new fronts, and 225's are at least £10 cheaper than 215's. Is it 'bad' that I'll be using 225 fronts and 215 rears?

yes, but the 45 is a percentage of the width of the tyre. in other words, the tire's height is 45 percent of its width. so, on a 225 the sidewall is slightly higher than on a 215. about 0.9cm (0.35 inch).

Correct.

VERY slight difference. But from the experience above - noticeable !

You not lose any handling characteristics with the wider/slightly higher tyres? I mean the whole purpose of lower profile tyres is there's less rubber to flex between the wheel and tarmac under load etc when cornering? Or is the difference so unnotable it's not even felt?
