[Aus] Walkie's track 172

A few of you have asked about it, so I thought I'd put up a proper thread, from the beginning, of my 2001 RSC 172 track car.

I had had my 182 since Nov '06 and had been slowly modding it for track days/fast road. It was also my daily driver. A cheap 172 came up for sale nearby @ the end of May 2009 and my Dad and I went to check it out. Paint was mint, drove pretty well, had recent 100k km service (both belts changed). We could tell it needed new engine mounts, something was making noises in the exhaust & the front left shock was a bit off.

We decided to go halves and share it as a track special (still road registered) and save our respective Renaultsports from track abuse! So we paid cash & took it home then & there. It's a December '01 build and one of the early 172s to come to Australia. Mileage when we picked it up was 98 500 km.

Timeline
30th May: Picked up 12/01 Iceberg Silver 172 w. 98 900km
2nd June: Ordered K-Tec group N engine mounts & Compbrake solid strut tops
9th June: Bought Anthracite stripes from Grafico
10th June: Booked in for check-up service
20th June: Washed, clayed & waxed. Removed centre caps. Added anthracite stripes
23rd June: Engine mounts arrive. 1x upper engine, 1x upper gearbox, 1x twisted rear gearbox
25th June: Bought new SSW S093 16" rims + fitted to left-over Kumho v700 205/45/16
1st July: Car serviced + engine mounts fitted - things noted: front left shock stuffed, timing & AUX belt not fitted properly (need to be redone). Booked it in again, for 11th August
5th July: Painted front and rear calipers red
11th July: Ordered KW Variant 2 coilovers from Demon Tweeks
24th July: Picked up new DBA slotted rotors
27th July: Fitted DS2500s (from my 182) and slotted rotors. Fitted new rear springs & shocks
28th July: Fitted front coilovers
29th July: Fitted SSW 16s
11th-14th August: Marathon PaulV service to redo timing & AUX belts
23rd August: Started stripping interior + de-wipered rear

A few pics from after we picked it up:

Lots more to come!

Cheers,

Alex

UPDATE: 25 June 2009

Joey (FIR.26T - legend!) dropped off our new rims (SSW S093 in matte black) & we got them fitted straight away with spare Kumho v700 205/45/16 seis that we had. Also picked up our Corbeau racing buckets that we had from another car that we got retrimmed in black leather (luxury all the way here! lol)

UPDATE: 17 August 2009

Just picked up the Bullet from its service. The previous only did the belts only back in October, but the mob that did it did such a bad job that we had to do it again... The timing was 20deg out, there were holes in the cam cover, bolts missing and the timing belt was loose!

All good now though: she feels good and strong

Off to the track soon!

UPDATE: 23 August 2009

Started stripping today. Removed everything except tar & seatbelts (I know, I know) from the front seats back, plus the lower front door trims. Better pics to come but here's some of it:

Also de-wipered the rear. Couldn't believe how much the mechanism weighs!

Next is the carpet & lower front trim. Door cards are staying for the moment.

Battery re-location is happening soon, then cup-racer induction setup and alignment and corner weighting

First track day should be within the next few weeks... can't wait!

Powerflex poly wishbone bushes to tighten up the front end some more. First garage installed them incorrectly (no tack welds on the sleeves) so they got destroyed after one track day. Paul V (AP Automotive aka the Renault Dr) installed the second set correctly and all has been fine since

Great thread.and a cracking little car.

Love the DBA disks, been looking at some recently. The HD series look very impressive especially the 5000XS, doesn't look like they do a fitment that will fit the clio tho.

OZRS Nats at a very wet Goulburn and Wakefield Park. I kept the semis on which resulted in quite a few spins in standing water on turn 6, one of which meant I knock my cat loose on a ripple strip and my exhaust fell off just as we came into Marulan on the way home! Secured it with a padlock through the bolt holes on the exhaust flange and had a very noise drive home...

Started on some tar removal today. Got 2 pieces out of the back and 2 out of the passenger foot well before I had to go and do the groceries... Weighs about 2kg, so judging by what's left on the floor to come out I reckon we can get up about 10-12kg in total. Was surprisingly easy to do - heat gun and a paint scraper and it all just lifted off. A bit of prepsol on an old rag afterwards and she was looking much cleaner. Only got the one photo on my iPhone:

And swapped the back wheel as they're getting new rubber. Amazed at out different the car looks with the track rims vs the road rims:

Had the lads around and got a few bits done. Cupra splitter and 6k xenon bulbs fitted (inherited them so thought, "why not fit them?"). Need to put it all back together as well as fit new DS2500 pads. Will get that done tomorrow.

Also stripped out some more tar and pulled off the redundant xenon washer hoses and foglight cables, and Dad gave everything behind the bumper a good clean!

Ordered a whole bunch of little bits and pieces to help tidy her up a bit so expect more updates in the next few weeks!

It's just a ph1 172 air box. I have plans to run if straight off the throttle body rather than at 90 degrees, as the battery has been moved.

Or maybe I should just get ITBs...

except after the first session, she wouldn't start! Found the culprit was a loose/disconnected plug to the starter motor, meaning push starts for the rest of the day! Thanks to those that helped...

A mate helped whip off the inlet manifold to see if we could get better access and plug it back in, but no luck, so it was another push start and straight to the Doc's (Paul V). Paul kindly squeezed us in and upon closer inspection, not only had the plug came out but the thick wire to the starter solenoid and its nuts had suffered some corrosion (most likely from an old battery leak) and they kind of fell apart when went to undo them. So a 2nd-hand starter motor was sourced from Dave in Gosford who delivered within 2 days (thanks mate), and Paul fitted it all up along with a 2nd-hand heatshield. He put a loop in the starter wire and fixed it with a nut to ensure that it won't come off unintentionally ever again!

The other issue was some tyre-scrubbing in tight right-handers which could be down to new front tyres (and not having had a wheel alignment since) or too much body roll. Will see if it happens again at Wakefield on Wednesday.

Ordered a few small bits and bobs (mostly cosmetic to help tidy her up a bit) off eBay a few weeks back and they've slowly been arriving in the post. So far silvervision bulbs all round and aero wipers replacements for the "who knows how old" standard wipers!

Apologies for the poor phone pics:

A few small updates since I last posted. We had the OZRS Nationals in mid-September in Benalla/Winton, Victora, which involved a long-weekend of drive day, track day and social events. Was great fun and the Silver Bullet performed faultlessly.
