197 Low Battery Problem

Hi,

:nope::nope::nope::nope:
The STOP light and Low battery appeared on the computer below the other day. I carried on with 2 small trips to do that day, it flashed up both times after the oil check. On the second trip as I was going home first the airbag light near the clock started flashing then stayed on, then the ESP/TC disabled message came on, then power steering cut out and my indicators wouldn't flash.

I tried moving it on the drive and sure enough it wouldn't start. I looked at the battery and the green light thing apeared black on it too so I figured everything was because of the battery.

I've bought a new battery farted around putting it in with that crazy positive side red box thing and the hard to reach clamp giving my hassel but all seemed well.

The car did start up first time, the time clock reset but it still says Low Battery instantly and ESD/whatever lights up and apears on the computer the same as when you disable it. I paniced and haven't taken it out of the garage. I've attached a small charger but I'm worrid sick. Do you think they will go off?

p.s. I did notice it stored my MPG and avarage speed even though the battery was disconected, do you think its stored the previous faults?!

I don't think you normally get all these warning lights with a low battery, sounds more like a dodgy alternator to me.

I know it's the last place a man looks but have you looked in the manual?

Manual is the best place to look if the car is out of warranty. Sounds like alternator if it started and then came up with the low battery again after a while.

try driving about for an hour and see if it foes off, mind you if youve got the charger on it that may solve it, and then take it for a drive round the block to see if it comes back on.

if the "esp" warning light is on - turn the steering - its the angel sensor on the steering needs to be found by the "esp" computer

you need a volt meter on the battery - should be about 13volts on tick over and as you increase the revs rise to about 14volts

same should happen if you put all the lights/electrics on

Hi again,

I drove it around and that ESP/ light went off so thats sorted. I did a full charge and drove it for ages but it still says low battery. I put the volt meter thing on the battery and can see it drops like hell when u turn the car on and isn't getting any charge no matter how long it runs.

The renault dealer said its not the battery its probably the alternator give us £86 and we will tell you. I said no thankyou :worried:

Has anyone else had altenator problems and how much are they?

Cheers!

Robbing gits, can you take it to a specialists? Is there one in your area? Not sure where you are from?

Hi,

I'm from chesterfield.

I'm gonna get the alternator checked for output. It looks hard to get at, the induction stuff looks like it needs taking out first.

I searched for an altenator on the net, £100 I think. UHOH !

i was under my car today realigning bumper and wd40-ing bolts ready for ball joint change tomorrow and it looks like the sub frame is in the way.

nothing is easy on these cars

All in for their diagnostic, parts, labour n vat it was £250.

A new altenator (the higher volt for ac one) was £240 including vat from 2 not renault places.

Something I noticed was the fault happened within 2 miles of 64000 on the clock. I wondered if anyone else will have this fault around this mileage.

Hello guys as an update please try this,

My car had the following
* low battery warning
*esp deactivated
*powersteering working without engine running
*not starting or clicking

Too fix please go under the bonnet and look too the far right and you will see the air inlet tube , under this there is a fuse box please disconnect your battery ,remove the air tube (located too the right of your battery) and remove the cover to the box and then check all fuses mine was the 20amp at the very bottom hidden with a thin plastic sheet.

Mine is now fixed and starts first time hope this helps guys
