Power gains Questions

Few thoughts I'm currently researching the best possible way to increase BHP on my Clio 3 RS 2012 200.

So my thoughts are what are the best mods to get to increase flat out BHP, Acceleration, Grip, Suspension (Comfort and Cornering Ability)

Is it more feesable to engine swap it if so what engines would fit if not what mods would you recommend.

Bare in mind this is my daily driver as well and I also use it on Drag Racing (Santa Pod Raceway)

If you want big power out of your Clio then an engine swap is really the only way. You could spend £20k on your current engine and still not get a huge amount of extra BHP.

It's not a power car, it's more about handling and thrills outside of outright speed. And bloody superb at it!

Seriously though, there are two different things you're asking for here. Driving experience vs outright acceleration. The Clio certainly isn't a drag strip car by any means.

The most affordable car that can be modded to silly BHP would most likely be an R34 GTR. But chasing big power needs very deep pockets and generally if you go as far as you can you're going to make it into something that is very definitely not suitable to being a daily.

My advice is to get the chassis of your Clio set up as well as you can afford, get an exhaust and induction kit for a bit of noise, maybe some weight reduction and then run it to the redline and drive it like you stole it. Do that and point to point you'd have to spend a very serious amount more to find anything even near as fun as the Clio.

Point is, it's a driving experience car, it's never going to be a crazy fast one.

Even with a big-power (350bhp+) megane engine transplant, the Clio is completely the wrong car for drag strips, being front wheel drive. The chassis excels on track, a remap will definitely improve it, and a megane engine makes it 100-times better. If you're after a car to take to drag strips, I'm afraid you've bought the wrong car.

Why is everyone desperate to change to a megane engine why not use the Clio engine, forge it and use an after market ECU. Surely that's a better package and lighter.

Because it’s easier and maybe slightly cheaper to do the conversion..
Low boost on a Clio engine will get around 230bhp and high boost around 280bhp but that putting a lot of stress on the engine.. the Megane is a stronger unit and a lot of the components come with the engine.
 
lots of reasons mate...a few are mentioned above..cheaper option id say..proved to work very well too..

Owe real delivery not the power figures and the loss of vvt does have a significant effect on spool. Has anyone measured the weight difference between a megane engine and gearbox unit compared to the Clio lump. One of the issues with the 197/200 as I see it I see the potential power to weight figures

Thats why so many strip them. Im trying to save 65kg from generic stuff. Headlight washers, interior bits, loss of rear seats and belts, lighter front seat subframes, replacing OEM exhaust with Milltek, lighter wheels, etc. I can see how you can easily lose 100kg, all aircon stuff is 15-20kg easily. Itll still never make it as fast as a highly tuned Meg lumped Clio though.
 
I managed to get my Impreza down to 1068kg, I could probably get a 197 down to that too but would be impossible to do and retain the objective of keeping the car useable on the road. The only problem I have with using a Megane set up is the car then becomes unusable in sprints as it dies not retain the standard block and gearbox

Maybe a stupid suggestion but what about supercharging it instead of turbo
 
You could in theory fit the megane pistons to the Clio block, thus retaining the standard block.
Also, going aftermarket is an issue due to the CANBUS etc.
250 engine is the way to go on these. Uprate the fuel pump and you've got a pretty-much bullet proof 320bhp and up to 360lb/ft torque, and using the 225 ecu keeps the Clio immobiliser etc.

I’ll just repeat what others have said; there’s little to no point chasing power with the normally aspirated F4R engine in our Clio’s. I’ve heard and read about guys spending lots of £££’s on power upgrades to end up with a whopping 215bhp, which you would hardly notice over the standard 197bhp either on road or track.

All the mods I made to my car were for feel, handling and appearance, as this is where you can make a noticeable improvement to these cars without spending a fortune.

If you want to chase horsepower I would mirror others suggestions on here and go for a Megane engine conversion, or sell it and buy something Japanese where big horsepower bolt on parts are easy to find and there is a very clearly defined path to higher horsepower.

Sums up my MegClio Sean,as I run 320/340. As is, the car is quicker than my ability, but probably talking to RST, about hybrid turbo, to get to 360bhp.

As a new owner of an RS200 cup and a mechanic also I’d suggest the chocolate gearbox synchros May also be a good reason to swap to a Megane engine vs turboing a 200 engine, if you can modify a car using standard parts it will always be more reliable than a lower powered engine modified and cheaper also

When I wanted a fast road stealth motor we thought about turboing allsorts of Peugeot engines, in the end I put a 3.0V6 406 engine in a partner van and had 1200kg with 210bhp with lower ratios than a coupe due to slightly lower profile tyres, 16” steelies looked subtle and different and the only other thing that gave it away was a stainless exhaust tip

As a new owner of an RS200 cup and a mechanic also I’d suggest the chocolate gearbox synchros May also be a good reason to swap to a Megane engine vs turboing a 200 engine, if you can modify a car using standard parts it will always be more reliable than a lower powered engine modified and cheaper also
