Gearbox whine!

Winner - POTM March 2018
Ladies and Gents,

I have a whiney gearbox! I have had it for awhile, its getting worse and especially with the cold weather. I believe it is a knackered release bearing as its mainly when the pedal is depressed. The clutch does not appear to be slipping, its a little stiff to get into gear but I have noticed no crunching. Ive been keeping an eye on the brake fluid cylinder but have noticed no drop.

Is this likely to be purely the release bearing or something more sinister? I may try and get a video.

Doug

the brakes and the clutch are supplied with fluid, both from the brake reservoir on the left side of your engine..im pretty crap when it comes to bleeding so no advice from me im afraid :pav:

Watching closely as I also need to bleed brakes/clutch and don't fancy paying out for it to be done...

I understand bleeding brakes but only from what I've read. Ill talk to the local indi garage and see what they charge.

And here is a short video, you can hear the whine. Its slightly linked to revs although dies down when warmer. If you rev it in neutral there is no noise hence my reasoning for not thinking its linked to the auxiliary or cambelt.

What symptoms Barney?

My clutch doesn't properly release until it's all the way hitting the floor, sometimes doesn't release at all so I try to change gear and it just grinds against the new gear.

Does it only happen when the car is cold?

Mine is stiff to get into gear when cold but its never crunched. I do feel that this down to the clutch not disengaging/engaging properly, I remember feeling similar on my old diesel BMW when the flywheel was knackered.

Only happens when cold but even when warmed up it takes awhile to go. Id say 10 mins of driving after warming up. When the temperature is better I notice its not so noisy. I do plan to get the clutch, flywheel and slave replaced later this year but given its in the region of £700 and Im saving for a wedding its not a priority! Maybe if it starts slipping...

Mine can be a bit noisy when cold. Everytime I start off from cold, in first gear, I get a definite clunk after a few meters (not changing gear or anything). Very odd, only happens once, just put it down to character...

Hmmmm, weird. Ive never had that, my bootlid does rattle due to the catch needing adjusting.

Ill update this once I talk to the local garage and see if bleeding the clutch will improve anything.

I’ve had this during my years of ownership, release the clutch in first, roll a meter or two then fairly low clunk... definitely part of the character, I don’t even notice it now!

I must have been a very lucky owner then..never experienced any of the typical clip bad trades...
