New 197 owner

Just purchased a 2008 Renault Clio Sport Cup edition in White. It doesn't feel 100% mechanically sound, but I'm taken with the car as it looks awesome inside and out. I've also accepted its going to be somewhat of a project.

She fires and goes, but it certainly doesn't feel in the region of 197bhp against a 1300kg kerb weight.

Gearbox is notchy. Easier when cold, doesn't want to take lower gears when revs are up. Any advice?

Throttle seems unresponsive and lumpy, especially when in 1st or reversing, you'd think it was going to cut out.

Can anyone recommend a garage north of Newcastle?

Cheers

Welcome!

Ren-Sport are in Middlesborough if that's any help? A few people on Facebook have mentioned them I've noticed.

Change the gearbox oil for sure, something OEM like Elf NFP will do the job, should probably ease it a little.

Wouldn't be surprised if your cam sensor is on the way out, I had that happen and had very similar symptoms, had it swapped out by Engine Dynamics whilst there for other work and it was like a different animal on the way home.

Get some pics up mate, sounds like you've caught the bug for sure. :excited:

Certainly sounds like a bit of a project.

Notchy gearbox is going to need a total rebuild to fix, can be quite pricey. Potentially new clutch+cylinder too.

If you have that sort of money to splash on a car you only just bought, I smell a megging coming on....

I think your bang on the money Barney. Clutch is heavy leaving me feel like I've been on the leg press down the gym.

Welcome, hope you get the car sorted quickly. They really are great fun to drive once they're spot on.

Welcome to the forum, Ash!

Hopefully you can get all the issues fixed relatively easily, and that it doesn't spoil your enjoyment of the car. If you have it in your head that you've got a lot of work to do, it should make the whole process that much easier!

Any help we can give, please ask!

Welcome bud!

Gearbox oil change, always a good idea. My clutch release bearing is noisy and gearbox is a little notchy when cold but I suspect with a fresh clutch and master cylinder may help the notchiness, whats the mileage on yours?

Again, when cold the throttle is naff, juddery and difficult. But sounds like a service, new camshaft sensor and new plugs would do it a world of good. Does it get up to temp ok?

Quick Vlog of the car. Divn't gan crackers. Any constructive criticism welcome. Please feel free to troll. I could do with a laugh....

Tidy little car that!

To answer a few questions on the video, the sticker under the wingmirror is not original, the way to see a Cup spec from the outside is red brake calipers, non colour coded door strips and cup emblem on door pillar.

The other thing that confused me is there is a standard non sport steering wheel fitted! The sports are chunkier with perforated leather and a red stripe at the top. Play in steering can be lots of things, bushes on rack, track rods, etc but depends if you are getting any other symptoms. Best to get waterpump done at the same time, some people also do th dephaser whilst its apart.

Welcome along. As mentioned if you’re needing a garage there’s that one in Middlesbrough. But there are two specialists much nearer if you’re in Newcastle. T Byrne Autos in Blaydon and DTM Cars in Killingworth.
