Nimbus 2008 197

Ok so planning on an engine and gear box oil replacement this sunday.

Engine oil+Filter is ordered and on the way but still working out which gearbox oil to go for.

Seen Castrol Syntrans V FE 75W 80 suggested by Pav here: http://www.clio197.net/threads/pavs-albi-blue-197t.42916/page-119#post-669405

Not sure which to go for, any advice?

Also on a humorous note, today my wiper fluid ran out so off the halfords for some new stuff. Got a funnel (Which ended up being too small) and started pouring directly from this 5L bottle into the reservoir expecting it to take max 1/2 of the bottle.
It took the whole bloody lot! Stopped at one point thinking I had a leak or something... :tearsofjoy:
 
Redline mt90 hands down. Really good quality oil which is designed to be used with the brass syncros inside the Clio boxes. Started using it recently in mine and it's recommended by a few people who really know these boxes and build them.
 
i've had both of the above in and both perform really well..red line is a bit more expensive but not by too much..cant go wrong with either of these 2..
 
Leaning towards the MT-90 atm then. These gearboxes tend to use 75W-80 dont they? I'm guessing it doesn't matter that the MT-90 us 75W-90?

Also, I've seen these boxes take 'just under 2L' but the MT-90 comes in US quartz so it's either 1.892L or 2.838L you can buy. Would the 1.892 be enough?
 
Is there a large difference in cost?

Wouldn’t want to be left with a not properly full gearbox....

Also I’m pretty sure they use some new oil to flush it through when they change the oil also... could be mistaken though.
 
Already ordered 2 quartz of the mt90.

As long as I let it drain for a bit I doubt flushing would be needed. There will always be a bit of the old fluid left in there...
 
So been driving around recently and been having real problems with my windows steaming up. Had to start using the AC to just keep it clear. Realised I had air circulation turned on causing it but while it was on I've been listening to my AC.

It's really, really loud. I can hear it over my exhaust all the time it's on. It sometimes just sounds like a dodgy belt but sometimes a really loud fridge.

This surely can't be normal? Any idea whats causing the noise?

The aircon works fine, lots of cold air coming out, but the noise makes me embarrassed to use it most of the time. When sitting in traffic you can hear it from the outside...

I will try to get a recording of it on sunday while I do oil changes but this kind of stuff is hard to get on camera...
 
Ok so just went out and it was still making the noise. Tried recording it while my phone was in it's holder not expecting much but it has captured it fairly well. You can hear right at the end of the video where I turn off the aircon. Changing fan speed seems to have no effect on it. There are a couple of different sounds going on at the same time but one of them reacts to changes in revs while the others are just random.


Yes the hissing is the aircon. Also notice how the general engine noise sounds more robotic, it's hard to hear on the recording but very noticeable in person.

P.s. I think someone crashed behind me at about 2:40 :tearsofjoy:

No way ! Was that the 'cheep' of squeeling tyres i heard at 2.40 ?

Someone in a MK3 trying to get a glimpse of the RS no doubt :smile:
 
I'm afraid the compressor of your A/C is on the way out. If you're lucky it's just the driving/carrier disc (not sure what's the correct term here) or a bearing somewhere.

Sidenote: I think Shuv is right with his assessment. Somebody wanted to take a look at an RS.:laughing:

How much are we talking? Is it something I can Diy?
 
Yes, to replace the lower mount should be a bit of a PITA from what I got. The whole undercarriage has to be dropped IIRC?

I had a new condenser fitted which is a bumper off job. A new compressor is a lot more work though. Compressors are far less prone to break than condensers though
 
Will have to get back to the aircon in a bit. Half way through doing the oil changes and found a loose plug coming down the back of the gearbox. Anyone recognise it?
