New to forum - exhaust questions

Hello everyone,

I have just bought a lovely RS Clio 200 from a member on here - Albi Blue FF with cup pack, Recaros, Ultras and some other bits and bobs. I've owned several Elises in the past as well as a Meg 250 Cup, which was stolen from where we used to live in East London in 2015. I've driven the RS Clio 200 many times and always promised myself I'd own one at some point. It's the closest I've found to the Elise in terms of pure driving thrills on a reasonable budget but is also far more practical, of course. In short, I love it.

However, I have one major frustration and I'm sure someone here can help: The exhaust is far, far, too loud and it's not a pleasant sound to my ears. The drone, in particular, on a motorway cruise is absolutely terrible. The previous owner tells me that the original owner deleted the centre silencer and the 'second cat'. Ideally, I'd replace the whole system with the Akra but I don't have the money for that right now. I understand the bit about the centre silencer but where is that 'second cat'?

Is there anyone on here who has just upgraded their exhaust or is about to do it who would sell me the bits I need to put it back to standard?

Any help/advice much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum - I totally know what you're experiencing, it's ear splitting! I've just tagged you in a for sale post, I think this is your only solution to keep your sanity intact, and very cheap too!

Welcome. Nice car you've got there and with the best wheels for these cars. Totally biased of course...

To get the standard exhaust off, 99% of people chop them in half to save a massive ballache. They can be sleeved/welded back up so this means you can pick them up cheap as chips.

Or maybe the one Micah tagged you in is good.

Nothing worse than a crap exhaust when you want to just drive the damn car!

Any Elise photos? Lots of Lotus love here!

Thanks, guys.

I don't have any Elise photos here right now but I'll post them up when I'm back at my desk. There were quite a few - not at the same time, you understand!

Yes, I think standard is the way to go for now. I have no problem with a good-sounding exhaust that's louder than OE on these cars but I'd say it's about quality as well as quantity. A nice rasp at high revs is all good but booming drone all the time is just silly, in my opinion. For example, the Akra exhaust would suit my needs just fine and that's probably what I'll go for when I've saved a few more pennies!

I also had several Elise, vx variants, some Ren sports to and I kept coming back to Ren sports due to the price vs drive - Loved the Elise though.

I have an Akra on mine it sounds great worth every penny.

We have an Akrapovic on ours. I can't praise it enough. Almost no different to standard when driving through town, just a bit beefier. Sounds bloody amazing when on it.

Saved a chunk of weight and freed up a few horses too.

By far the best exhaust to have on these. Admittedly they're expensive but it's a full exhaust so not as totally daft as it seems.

Look forward to the Lotus photos. There are some of mine in the Other Marques thread in the general section. :thumb:

It looks like Micah's tip has worked out. I've bought the centre section bits from the for sale section, so thanks very much for that Micah!

Yes, the Akra is very much on my shopping list but it'll have to wait. £1k+ just after a car purchase isn't going to happen!

I can't find most of my Elise pictures but here are a couple of number 4 - 111R with Katana supercharger, 2bular exhaust, custom map and some other bits.

Who did your Meg conversion? Or did you do it yourself? I see you are in Bodmin - I'm in Tintagel, so not far away. Who do you use for servicing/maintenance?
I'm doing it. Mechanical side is easy ish. Loom different matter so far !tintagel, nope just up road ! I do my own maintenance. Have a friendly garage up the road.
