Advice about rear anti roll bars

Hi all, I'm Charlie.

I'm considering fitting a rear anti roll bar to my completely standard 2007 197 and would really appreciate some advice.

I live in a city with some pretty crap roads on my commute so don't want affect the ride over the bumps too much if at all. For when I'm out of town, if possible I'd like to make turn in a bit more precise without making the car snappy in any way.

A garage has recommended one of these: Whiteline Rear Anti-roll Bar ARB - 20mm heavy duty blade adjustable. The fellow there says it's for a mk2 but will apparently fit a mk3.

Should I go ahead or should I keep it standard? Would a different bar be better? Any help please would be great.

Also, I spoke to my insurer about this and after a bit of back and forth to an underwriter, they agreed that I could go ahead with it. I was just wondering how far an insurer like say Churchill or Admiral will allow you to go in modifying your car before premiums change or they decline to insure?

Thanks in advance, hope you're all having a great bank holiday!

I fitted an ultra racing rear roll bar to mine..good quality but it's a bit heavy and pricey..
To be honest with you..it made very little difference if any on public roads..haven't had a chance to properly test it on a track yet..

Thanks for the replies. I have P Zero Neros.

Is there a better way to achieve those handling characteristics, without scaring my insurer too much?

Yea I was going to say fit a set of AD08s. Improve handling and don't have to say a word to insurers

Good tip, thanks. I'll look in to those

Seems an anti roll bar isn't the way to go for me, which is great to know.

Cup shocks and springs is another option, actually have a complete set on 20k

Those I think should mean another conversation with my insurer. But again, thanks and I'll look in to them.

I do trust the fellow - Julian from Balance Motorsport in Sussex - who said it. And he must have known I'd just have bought it straight back if it hadn't. Saying that, don't come back to me if you buy one and it doesn't fit

Hi Snozles. What is it that you are trying to achieve? Just a better turn in?

You can do this by toeing the wheels out a bit and fit some more focused rubber with stiffer sides. That will massively help. If you need some more then fit some solid top mounts, if that's not enough then add some negative camber. All that will definitely contribute to the better.

If you are still not happy then add a front strut brace and if your quest is not fulfilled then you'd need the cup suspension. Remember, that will massively compromise the ride of the car. Cup suspension is not good for nasty roads..

Thanks for the advice. My tires are pretty new but I will be looking at different ones when I replace them. Otherwise I'm keeping it standard. Got my first ever notice of intention to prosecute a couple of weeks ago - so after just a few weeks of ownership - so don't think I should do anything that might encourage speed...

i got the DNA racing Rear ARB from Ktec, the difference it made was unbelievable, turn in was so much sharper and understeer is hard to find unless going in at unrealistic speeds

Out of interest guys do you run standard location springs? Having coilovers on the rear would transform the rear end as you have different flex in the rear beam.. it's too late to think at this time it will aid or hinder roll stiffness! [emoji23]

I'm on cup shocks with H&R springs. My old Fiesta ST was on a similar setup but aftermarket shocks too although the spring was still sat in the standard location, separate from the shocks. Having a Whiteline ARB on that car made an incredible difference to how the car handled and it's stability under braking.

Update. Doesn't fit, the ARB is several inches too narrow to reach the mounting points and the U-bolts don't fit over the rear beam.

Bollocks.
