Gear Selection

Hi Folks,

Another strange one.

When stationary, I let the car warm a little and then go to select a gear - unable to as though the clutch is still engaged. The gear selection is fine when the car is switched off and is also fine when I am in motion.

The strangest thing is, it only seems to be difficult to select the gear on occasion. Some times I can jump in the car and it is as smooth as butter, others it doesn't want to play ball at all.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
DB.

Clutch... and associated bits, that’s what enables gear selection, try pumping the pedal 4 or 5 times then trying

Try bleeding you slave..

I asked the Renault techie to bleed the clutch and he said they don't like to do it, because if the clutch goes to the floor it ends up being a 'drop the gearbox' job to put it right.

I haven't got a clue really, but if they said they weren't happy to do it I thought it good enough reason not to instruct them to do it anyway.

The master tech told me whatever you do to try and resolve the difficult to engage 1st gear when cold, it will still come back.
The car just needs to warm up for 5 mins or so, then everything is smooth as butter.

I've replaced gear oil, and had the linkages greased and it made no difference to gear selection when cold.
Either in winter or summer.

Bleeding it with a pressure bleeder shouldn’t cause any issue with the clutch falling to the floor as the master cylinder doesn’t need to move, find an Indy with a pressure bleeder and it may solve your issues or it may need a new slave cylinder, but what do you have to lose?

I come back with the same problem, what I do is start the car with the 1st gear and the clutch activated. the car drives perfectly from there

Whats your thoughts on the stiff 1st from cold Foxspeed ?
Any solution other than bleeding /replacing the slave cylinder

as already advised is 1. bleed clutch 2. use the "improved" gearbox oil - if that sort of "fails" to sort it them i would be looking at new clutch

I’ve had the gearbox oil changed at Xmas.
Only stiff to get in gear when cold for a few mins.
I can live with it tbh. But a proper fix would be nice

So, I went with the cheaper option first and had the clutch pressure bled.

There was quite a bit of air released from the system and it has definitely made an improvement; however, it still occurs intermittently. I think I will take it back in to be fully pressure bled and run some new fluid through to ensure all air is released and then I can be certain.

Cheers for all of the input folks and I shall update after it has been bled the 2nd time.

Pressure bleeding sometimes cures it, and if air came out you may well be lucky, god knows how it gets in, but fingers crossed for ya bud

Just as an update on this, I haven't yet got around to having the clutch bled for a 2nd time as yet.

The thing is, the problem has now self-rectified. It was still posing a bit of a problem with gear selection, however, since last Wednesday I have not had a single issue.

It is once again like butter.

This is the 2nd time my clio has sorted its own issues out; I think i'm falling in love. :french:
