ABS/ ESP sensor light

So as the title says my ABS and ESP sensor is on. I got a diagnostic check and it’s saying rear speed sensor, so first thing I did was replace the sensor but with no luck! Then I got the disc replaced but £200 later still no luck! Can anyone advise on what the problem is before I drive her to the scrap yard?!

Thanks!

I had a similar issue which was corrosion on the stub axle, specifically on the part which holds the abs sensor. I'd make sure both rear stub axles are free of rust if you haven't done so already. Which diagnostic software was used?

Has it been on a dyno/rolling road recently? Produced a fault code on mine previously

Yeah the rear stub axel seems a bit flakey with rush, what would you suggest? Wire brush it or replacing it. The mechanic has a Snap on Solus which detects it as the read abs speed sensor housing

you should test the wiring on the abs to that wheel..not just relay on a "vague" rear sensor fault...the abs ecu isnt gettting the readings it should therefore its throwing up the fault..check voltages/resistance of the wiring to/from sensors

It depends on how bad it is and how far the rust has spread to be honest. It's worth cleaning up and seeing how bad it is. On my 197, the rust didn't spread too far so it was cut out without affecting the integrity of the rest of the sensor housing. If yours is similar, you can get away with doing the same, however if it's really bad then it would be advisable to replace the stub axle.

Yeah Similar problem happened here. Corrosion was pushing (something; ABS ring?) out, renault specialist cut it out, and replaced with with a part of a laguna i think. Off the top of my head, he mentioned graphite, which should be on the (ring?) which is what the ABS sensor uses to take readings and there wasn't actually any left on the (ring?). He charged me a fiver for the bit off the laguna, and an hours labour lol.

I've got the same ABS/ESP problem on my car.

I went to Renault specialist, but his CLIP broke when trying to scan, so he used his other Autel scanner, it came up with the following codes:

IMG_20180414_091335.jpg

So my symptoms are:
* when you first start the car, the codes pop up
* soon as you move they go off
* then when coming to a stop it makes a grinding noise like ABS is kicking in (this is the first moving of the car, under about 30mph, i'll explain in a sec)
* then when you go over 30mph it then flags up the ABS/ESP light
* now if you come to a stop, no grinding noises, stops perfectly.

Every time it is switched off, this above sequence occurs!

Cruise control works (so does this use front speed sensors?), drives fine once the lights have flagged up by goin over 30mph.

So will it also be the stub axle, or is it the sensor?
Also discs are pretty new (SNR discs + brembo pads), with new pads.

Thanks

I got my problem fixed! So what happened is the rust on the stub axel is in contact with the ABS ring, this shredded the ABS ring. So my mechanic grinded down the rust and replaced the disc and that cleared the code!

Sounds like a rusty stub axle as your symptoms are exactly the same as mine, ABS engaging at low speeds whilst the code is not present, and then the code coming up on the dash when going above 30 mph.

Thanks man, so did you clean up the rusty stub / reluctor ring on the disc and all good?

No worries, I had the garage cut out the corrosion on the stub axle and fit new discs as one of the ABS rings was missing altogether.

Oh ok thanks, I will have a look at how bad it is, and maybe buy a new ring, stupid french cars haha.

If you get stuck I can read the Renault specific fault codes, saves you the cost of visiting a specialist.
