Gearstick can move around while in gear

So 2 weeks ago I got the 3rd & 4th gear synchro rings replaced in my 200 gearbox.

While driving (quite gently on motorway) today I noticed the stick felt funny moving into 6th, kind of mushy when pushing it right. When pushing the stick to the left in neutral and letting go, it snaps back to centre by itself, but when pushing it right it just stays there.

I then noticed that, while in 2nd, 4th or 6th gears, the stick can move all the way to the right as if in neutral - while in gear!
When I select 2nd, it engages and then jumps across to where 4th should be, and the stick needs pushed left while in neutral to get 4th back to where it should be.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?
It's worth nothing I had a new clutch/slave cylinder, driveshaft and full timing belt kit installed at the same time the gearbox went back in. Thanks

I don't know for sure but there is adjustment in the sector cables surely the mechanic drove the car after fitting the box or has this developed later.

Yes he drove it, it was actually fine for 2 weeks before doing this.
You think it's the selector rather than the gearbox? I'm not that familiar with how it works:sweatsmile:

It might be best to let the guy know and give him a chance to look at it nothing pisses a person off more than someone else messing with something a then coming back to them. I think you have a genuine problem most likely something was not clipped in tight and has popped off giving you the free play.

Yes I will do that, thanks for the guide image I'm sure it will come in useful.

Any chance of damaging the gearbox if I drive with the stick flopping around for a few days?

The problem is not with the gearbox it's when you enter a roundabout, pull out of junctions and overtake if you loose gear selection you loose drive and you might not get back into any gear and then there is an accident if it's gone this far it can get worse and you cant decide when. So if your pulling a manoeuvre then try and keep the gear change until your out of danger.

Got it done a few days later - mechanic knew what it was straight away.
I believe he reattached the clip and put a cable tie or two around it to keep it in place.
Thanks again for the help.
