Oh I sure did. Car was filthy unlike photos. Was told after waiting for 20 mins for the guy to show up that it probably won't start cos he thinks battery is flat. Was just parked on a side road opposite a tyre place awaiting two new tyres apparently. Hole in middle of drivers seat not the bolster which is hidden from pics. Dodgy area too. Garage all locked up with metal bars all round and some generally awful trader reviews online. I know I've also never seen or driven a 197 but it just didn't sound or feel right to drive. Tracking is out too. Anyhow just saw a new advert on auto trader thanks to a work colleague and instead of a back street dealers it's from an Evans halshaw in hull. Only had it in stock 30 days apparently. Brand new mot. Mint paintwork except alloys desperate for a refurb. Nicely valeted. 6 service stamps with cam belt change on last one. 09 plate so it's a 200. 81k. Was more than I wanted to spend (5k and I wanted to spend 4500 or less) but loved it and felt reassured it wasn't dodgy. Put a 4K deposit down and I'll pay the remaining 924 asap. Sorry about the long post but I really love it and finally a 197/200 owner and fully fledged member! Oh advert doesn't say but it's defo lowered and has piper cross air filter. Sounds mega!! Hi guys yeah, alloys need a refurb badly and seats will certainly benefit from a full valet but that's all small. I was more concerned with if it had timing belt done and what remaining not was left. Plus I really really loved it with the spoiler and I didn't think I'd afford a 200 either so was expecting to end up with a 197. Yeah the dodgy one was the blue with white wheels on auto trader in Huddersfield TBH this is my fave colour alongside liquid yellow so I'm overjoyed its this colour. Will be tinting read windows though. Always something I've preferred. Hoping to pick up asap mate but no set time. I sold a go kart and waiting payment of a grand for it so whichever comes first, that or payday end of month.

Oh. Update. Those pics were taken as soon as they got the car in stock. It's had a proper valet since. Come up mint exterior and above average interior. So looks loads better than online photos

Not so good update - wasn't aware of free mot check services. My mate did a previous mot scan when I got home. Failed on quite a few things. Now the brakes and tyres have been changed - that's clear to see from the website photos to a couple photos I took today. But the rest I've no idea. So will have to call them tomorrow to make sure all the mot fails were fixed. I know nothing about mechanics at all so this stuff means nothing to me. Hopefully when I ring them, they can confirm everything was done

Also a fair sign of un-mechanically minded previous owner (?) or someone who just didn't care. [Who on Earth would put a car with all those (Some were fairly serious and you'd think extremely noticeable) faults in for MOT] and you could argue a sign of s car thats not been maintained very well leading upto that point.

That is a bit of a kick in the teeth for you to find out all that after placing a deposit... The positive things are that you've caught this in time before actually buying the car, and also that there is still the opportunity to get it sorted, or at worst walk away if you aren't happy.

As above, it is slightly worrying that someone would submit a car in that state for an MOT test. They aren't exactly things that could easily slip under the radar...

As you suggest, get on to Evans Halshaw and make sure that all of that work has been done - ask to see documentation/invoices proving that the faulty parts have been replaced. Don't just take their word for it - this is your hard-earned money that you're going to be putting into this car, don't let them fob you off. If they can't provide anything satisfactory, consider walking away. As Pav says, you don't want to be faced with a large bill for repairs straight after buying it.

As for it's previous history and how it's been treated/kept - very hard to tell with it being sold by a dealer, however make sure it has a full service history and all related documents/invoices - paperwork is an excellent way to build up a picture of how it was maintained. A careful owner will not have scrimped on important service items, and even fairly minor ones.

Go into it with eyes wide open Dave, and if you have any doubts, walk away. £5k is a large amount of money to spend on a car like this, so make sure it's on the right one. Apologies for the essay, but I'd hate for you to be disappointed with your purchase, so I wanted to help out as much as possible.

No I totally appreciate that and agree fully. I spoke to them today, they've confirmed everything was sorted - including the advisories. Running an online mot check confirms this also as there's now no advisories showing. I'll be making sure when I pay the remaining balance that I see invoices for work carried out although I do still believe them as they do have a reputation to protect being a main dealer.

Anyhow.... insurance for slightly modded cars? Best place? I've got a quote off Adrian flux but no idea who to compare against. Current insurance cancelled as they won't accept mods (1st central) thanks

I’m insured through Greenlight (I think!) and they gave me a better quote than anyone else.
Having just read the update on this thread, I’ve seen many a slating of Evans Halshaw lately on Facebook. I hope they were just isolated cases.

That's good that they've confirmed the work has been done and your check has backed that up. Definitely check the paperwork, both for making sure it has been done, and also for having a complete history of things.

Another vote for Greenlight on insurance - mods were included for me at no extra cost, even when added mid-term. I've been very happy with my dealings with them over the last couple of years.
